HAMMONTON—Welcome to the flyest place in Hammonton—The Taildragger Inn! This aviation and war history museum, located adjacent to the Hammonton Municipal Airport, is truly a hidden gem.
Built in 1968, the house and its original hangar predate the airport itself. Originally home to Flight Apparel Industries Inc., founded by Al Colangelo, the property served as a factory for crafting pilot uniforms, stewardess outfits, casino attire, and the iconic Century 21 jackets, some of which are proudly displayed.
Now, President Barry Straga and Treasurer Julie Olsen call this place home and have transformed it into a unique museum, honoring important history and both of their fathers who served.
Straga’s lifelong love for aviation began in childhood alongside his father, leading him to earn his pilot’s license in 2001. Together, they participated in Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) breakfasts, where they would fly into Hammonton and enjoy Inferrera’s famous sausage—a cherished tradition in the aviation community.
The Taildragger Inn has now taken that tradition to new heights. Within the museum, visitors can explore over 15 distinct exhibits, from a F4U Corsair engine to an authentic WWII and Vietnam-era Jeep display. The collection spans decades of history, featuring military artifacts from WWI through Vietnam, including items straight from the deck of the USS Missouri.
Complementing its impressive exhibits, the Taildragger Inn hosts a variety of events, including their annual Fly-In Breakfast held this past June and a recent wedding in October.
With two spare bedrooms and countless stories within its walls, the Inn offers a cozy retreat that keeps guests coming back, blending history and hospitality in every visit.
Each winter, Straga and the Cardboard Sled Union #933 bring their adventurous spirit from the skies to the slopes at the annual WMMR Cardboard Classic. Months of preparation take place at the Taildragger where they construct elaborate creations–like a life-size Hogwarts train and a Top Gun-inspired jet– that race down the mountains in a competition.
Take the time to visit the Taildragger Inn. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or simply curious, you’re guaranteed a one-of-a-kind experience. With fascinating exhibits and passionate owners eager to share their knowledge, this local treasure invites visitors of all ages to explore.
Everyone is welcome to visit. You can email TaildraggerInn@gmail.com or call (856) 383-9015 for any inquiries. This is your chance to take flight into history.
