MARGATE—A new era for the Hammonton Hot Shots began last week as the local South Jersey South Shore Baseball League (SJSSBL) squad gave first-year manager Pete Berenato a victory in his debut, defeating perennial rival and the defending league champion Margate Hurricanes 3-2.
“It was a good team win. We put constant pressure on them by working some good at bats and running the bases well,” Berenato said.
The Shots grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the first. Nick Ciesielka walked to start the game and Hammonton loaded the bases after Mason Dorsey was hit by a pitch and Drew Haines walked. Jon Newman walked to force in a run and Matt McAleer was hit by a pitch to drive in another as the Hot Shot scored twice without a hit.
Ciesielka walked again to start the third and scored on Dorsey’s single to put Hammonton ahead 3-0.
Margate scored runs in the fifth and sixth but were held in check by Hot Shots starter Aiden Ewe, who went five and a third, striking out eight. Chris Garwood tossed the final inning and two thirds to earn the save.
Two days later on May 28, Hammonton shut out host Egg Harbor Twp. 5-0. Jon Newman singled and scored in the first for the Hot Shots and in the third, Bobby Falese an Dorsey added RBIs.
Josh Wagner earned the win, scattering three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn the complete game shutout.
The week ended with a 10-2 win at Northfield on May 31.
Colin Ahart drove in four runs in the victory, belting a grand slam in the second inning. Newman stole home in the third and Haines added three hits.
Garwood notched the win, going six innings with five walks and four strikeouts. Berenato mopped up in the seventh, recording a pair of strikeouts.
Earlier this week, Hammonton played at Ocean City and at the South Jersey Surf. Those games ended too late for this edition. The Hot Shots play their home opener on June 12 against the Ventnor Bay Sox at Hammonton Lake Park at 7 p.m.
