HHS girls fall to EHT

HAMMONTON—A huge first-quarter deficit proved too much to overcome for the Hammonton High School girls basketball team on January 18, as the Blue Devils lost to visiting Egg Harbor Twp. 48-33.

The Eagles used 12 points from Averie Harding to build a large 22-5 lead in the first period, and despite mounting a solid comeback, the Blue Devils fell short of earning their ninth win of the season.

“They just really had too much for us tonight. Their girl (Harding) was unstoppable early in the game and once we fell behind, we just didn’t have enough to come back,” Hammonton coach Ryan Staiger said.

The Blue Devils played EHT evenly for the last three quarters, but the Eagles were able to maintain their lead the rest of the way.

“I liked what I saw from us in the second half. We kept playing hard against a really good team,” Staiger said.

Angelina Virelli led Hammonton with 15 points, while Kiley Kozlowski added eight.

Later in the week, Hammonton’s game against Atlantic City was postponed due to poor weather.

Earlier this week, the Blue Devils played at Millville, but that game ended too late for this edition. On January 24, Hammonton visits Cedar Creek at 5:30 p.m.
