HAMMONTON—Preparations for the 2010 fall season were in full swing last week, as several teams from both local high schools saw their first preseason action.
Hammonton High School’s football team looked strong in scrimmages early in the week in a tri-scrimmage against host Williamstown and Cherry Hill West. The Blue Devils ended the week with another solid performance at Cherokee.
“We did a nice job on both sides of the ball. Obviously, it’s early and we still need to work on a lot of things, but overall I was happy with our performance,” head coach Pete Lancetta said.
At St. Joseph, the Wildcats’ football team opened its preseason against Mainland, and ended the week with a scrimmage at Paul VI.
In both, St. Joe’s defense appeared strong, while the offense was able to move the ball well.
“We’re getting there. Hopefully, we’ll be ready once the season starts,” head coach Paul Sacco said.
One coach pleased with her team’s performance was HHS girls soccer coach Lisa Cuneo, whose team played well in its first action against Williamstown.
“We have so many new players, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect,” she said.
“But if that’s the way we’re going to play all season, I’ll be very happy. We played a good game against a very good team. For the first time out, we looked great,” she said.
Hammonton’s field hockey team also played well in a scrimmage against Pinelands.
“We had some trouble early, but once we settled down I thought we did a good job. We have a lot of girls in new positions and playing together for the first time, so once they get a little more comfortable with each other, I think we’ll play better,” head coach Rosie Santiago said.
At St. Joe, the girls soccer team hosted Atlantic Christian in its first scrimmage.
“We have some things to work on, but overall I’m happy. They’re working very hard. I’ve been really pleased with them,” head coach J.P. Jones said.
Hammonton’s tennis team lost its opening scrimmage at Bishop Eustace, but bounced back for a solid performance at home against Our Lady of Mercy Academy.
“We’re very young, and I’m hoping that we can keep improving throughout the season,” head coach Casey McCullough said.
