Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

I would like to take a moment to let you know about an exciting opportunity for everyone in Hammonton. We would like to ask mayor and council to approve a live, televised old-fashioned debate at town hall with all three parties' candidates participating. The three Hammonton First candidates feel that this is a Hammonton tradition that should be revived and not be allowed to fade from Hammonton's political landscape.
Debates were televised in the past, as recently as the early 1990s, and were a tradition with the other two parties in town. We would like to be included in this tradition of years past and bring it back to life within the walls of our newly constructed town hall.
Citizens of Hammonton will be able to watch the live debate at home on the town's TV Channel 9 or stop by to get a front row seat to see up close how each candidate feels about the future of our town. It gives voters a different perspective and allows you to get to know each candidate on neutral ground, in an open setting.

To the Editor:

Once again I am writing to The Hammonton Gazette about the Hammonton Lake Park. I wrote a couple of years back telling how proud I was to visit the park as I did as a youngster. I reminisced of all the good times I had there, having our school picnics and having to find branches to stab the wieners for roasting. We would eat the wieners, and then came the best part of roasting marshmallows.
I remembered all the good times with children laughing and enjoying the wonderful day that we were so fortunate to have, being out of school. Having a wonderful park to wade in the water and play on the swings enjoying each other’s company and getting along with everyone. Gosh, we had some fun times there.
You see I now live in Hawaii, and visit Hammonton every year. I would not think of going to Hammonton without visiting the Hammonton Lake Park.
I am now a young 65 years old and lived all my younger years in Hammonton, enjoying everyday being spent there. I still have relatives and friends in Hammonton. This year as in the past, I could not wait to go to the park when I arrived.
Entering the park, I thought, “Wow, it is really being kept up with the beautiful playground for the youngsters and the ballpark.” I parked my rental car and went running over to the lake. I was aghast as to the dirtiness and probably contamination of the water which at one time was beautiful to sit around or wade in. What has happened to this lake?
I went over to the swings and sat there and honestly wept as I looked across the lake. No one would go into that water; it was truly a heartbreak.
I write this letter to the editor in hopes that someone will look into this situation and correct it so other children will be able to enjoy this lovely park and will make their own memories and perhaps come back to visit Hammonton Lake Park when they are grown.
I will be back next year, the good God willing, and hopefully see a good change take place to the Lake. Please consider this request.

To the Editor:

Balanced representation on council is a win-win for the town. Each political party must bring its “A-game” if it is to compete for the voters’ approval.
To provide this critical political balance, I am supporting the Democratic Team of Falcone, Mac Lane and Perrotta. Hammonton First seeks to occupy all seven seats on council.
Yet we all remember the lethargy and confusion when the GOP occupied every seat. Plus, if one party controls at least five seats, then that party can borrow without any type of check on their decision. The local GOP claims to offer a choice that is different from Hammonton First but unfortunately, they often sound more like an echo.
The Hammonton Democrats are the best option to provide checks and balance to the town council. Their presence will ensure that the needs of the entire community will be addressed. So I urge all Hammontonians to support the team of Falcone, Mac Lane and Perrotta.
Whether you feel that it’s all good in Hammonton or that you have been left out, the Hammonton Democrats will make the town better.

Dr. Thomas Santone
