Gazette Sports Week brought to you by The Hammonton Gazette and sponsored by Adrenaline Fitness THIS WEEK:Hammonton Hot Shots--Shots win twice to take over sole possession of firstplace in the South Jersey South Shore Baseball League.  Hammonton openedthe week with a 7-5 win at Galloway and ended by beating EggHarbor Twp. 2-0.  Rallied for three runs in the top of theseventh to beat Galloway.  Matt McAleer with a pair of hits and John andZach Newman played big roles in the win.  Against EHT, Jon Gonzalezblasted a solo homer run that sealed a close game.  John Kasperwith the win. Busy week for the Shots, who played Buena on Monday, at SomersPoint Tuesday and will host Ocean City Wednesday and Egg Harbor City onThursday. Meet of Champions--Hammonton’s MitraSampson, a freshman, placed 11th in the shot put at the Meet of Championslast week.  Her mark was 36-10.25.  Emma Peretti couldn’tcompete because weather postponed the meet until Thursday when HHS hadits graduation ceremony.  Also for the Blue Devils,Jules Dogostino was 19th in the javelin at Nationals in theRising Stars Division. Little League--Hammonton All-Star teams beganDistrict 16 play last week. Action continues this week with a few games atHammonton Lake Park.Hammonton Hawks--Hawks begin another Flag Footballseason at Hammonton Middle School. Games are Monday and Wednesday.INTERVIEW: HHS Baseball players Drew Haines and Matt McAleer. Gazette Sports Week brought to you by The Hammonton Gazette and sponsored by Adrenaline Fitness THISWEEK:St.Joseph SoftballWildcats wintheir first-ever state Non-Public B championship, defeating Morris Catholic7-1.  Alaina Dorsey two triples, a run and three runs batted in for St.Joseph. Great game from Ava Fisher, a 3-hitter, 14 strikeouts, was only introuble once, bottom of the first, but left the bases-loaded.  Caps anoutstanding run for the Wildcats who have won four-straight South Jersey titlesand finally get that elusive championship. St. Joe finishes the season at 22-6. Hammonton Track--Senior Emma Peretti wins the state Group3 championship in shot put with a school record throw of 39-feet. Peretti was also seventh in the discus.  Freshman Mitra Sampsonwas fifth in shot put at 37-9.  For the boys, Christian Medina threw wellin the shot and the 4x800 team (Brandon Martinez, Jesus Flores, Fernando Floresand Dom DeRose) wrap up a strong 4-year run by finishing 18th (were seeded 24th).Peretti wasalso named the winner of the Old Grad Award as the best female athlete inAtlantic County. She starred in soccer, basketball and track. Great way to enda stellar high school athletic career.Hot Shots--Solidweek for the Shots, who beat Margate 2-1, lost to Northfield 6-3 and finishedthe week with a 7-6 extra inning win against Ocean City.INTERVIEW:  Saint Joe Softball Standout Angelina Bill and DrewHaines. IN NATIONAL SPORTS:  Phillies—Phils sweep Detroit, begin weekendseries with a split of two against the Dodgers.  NBAPlayoffs—Denver took control of the Finals with a two-game sweep in Miami andlooked to close out the series on Monday night. NHL Playoffs--Vegas takesGame 5 3-2 to grab a 3-1 lead in the Finals. Gazette Sports Week brought to you by The Hammonton Gazette and sponsored by Adrenaline Fitness THISWEEK: St. Joseph softball--Wildcatscapture their fourth consecutive South Jersey Non-Public B championship,beating Gloucester Catholic 9-2.  Angelina Bill with a huge game, abases-loaded double that broke the game open and then a solo homer, the firstof her career.  Alaina Dorsey drove in two runs and Jenna Calchi and BellaDavis each had key hits.  Ava Fisher benefitted from the run support,earning the win with 14 strikeouts while allowing just two hits.  Fisherwas the star of St. Joe’s semifinal win against Doane Academy, striking out 19and adding a double in a 3-hit shutout as St. Joe won 6-0.  Wildcats willtake on Morris Catholic on Friday night at Kean University.Hammonton Baseball--For the second-straight year, Hammonton’sseason comes to a close with a South Jersey Group 3 semifinal loss. Mainlandtopped the Blue Devils 3-0 last week.  Hammonton managed just three hitsin the game, as the Mustangs took control early.  Blue Devils wrap up theseason at 15-12. Hammonton Track--Devils compete wellat South Jersey Group 3 championships.    Hammonton Hot Shots--After losing the seasonopener 11-0, Shots bounced back to beat the defending league champion SouthJersey Surf 3-0 behind a Mason Dorsey home run and a strong outing from ChrisGarwood.  Last Friday, Hammonton edged Ventnor 5-4 in nine innings.  JonKaspar a strong start and Pete Berenato closed it out. Zach Newman with a homerun.  This week, the Shots played at Margate on Monday, visit NorthfieldWednesday night and are home on Thursday against Ocean City.Interview: St. Joseph softball player Macie Jacquet. IN NATIONAL SPORTS: Phillies--Phils were swept by the Mets and then lost their seriesopener in Washington.  This team continues to struggle on the mound andneeds its lineup to be much more consistent.  Sixers--Philly hires Nick Nurse, who won atitle with Toronto, as its new head coach.  Solid choice, and curious asto why Nurse chose the Sixers when he could have had the Phoenix job.  Eagles--Birds hold OTAs. Are they interested in Deandre Hopkins? Hewould give them a solid possession option with Smith and Brown and could be ahuge difference maker for the offense. Hammonton continues to play solid baseball, fourth-straight win and9-of-11.  St. Joseph Baseball--Wildcats opened the playoffs with a 10-0win against Moorestown Friends. Jimmy Matuano a strong game ant TyPowell, Jake Marootian also swung well.  Lucas Middleman withthe win. Second round saw a 11-0 loss at Ranney, one of the top teamsin the state. St. Joe end the season at 7-14.St. Joseph Softball--Wildcats playedRutgers Prep on Friday after the show was recorded.  HammontonSoftball--A disappointing season ended for HHS on May 23 with a 6-4 loss toMainland in the first round of the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs.HammontonTrack--MitraSampson wins another title, taking the CAL championship in the shotput. Great season from the freshman. HHS girls did well, withJules Dogostino third in javelin. For the boys,Antony Liaknovich second in shot and Christian Medina second. They’ll gear up for sectionals this week.Hammonton Tennis--Blue Devilsbeat Wildwood Catholic and Lower Cape May before losing their postseason openerat Toms River South. Great season where HHS far exceeded expectations.Saccomoves to ACIT--Former St. Josephfootball coach Paul Sacco announced that he will be an assistant at ACIT nextseason.
